Interesting stuff; wonder if the Z car and Evolution VIII will have (correct) engines?

Several of the reissues will be popular; the Caprice sold out amazingly fast the last time it was out.

Supra or Skyline? I had heard Skyline. Interesting conversion, considering the base motor in the Mustangs back then was an inline 6 with far fewer ponies.

AMT would be wise to tool the engine, as it would sell a lot more of the kits when word got out...lots of Skyline models and modelers out there that would eat that up.

Interesting stuff. The '50 Ford has been absent for far too many years; good to see it back! What, no Challenger concept?:)

Nope, but then again it's AMT and they could take their current Challenger HT/CV kit, add dub wheels and throw it in a box w/the concept car on the cover...aka business as usual ;) :D

It clearly says "Nissan" so of course it's a Supra motor  ;)

Seriously, any car fanatic younger than 30 will be drooling over a good Skyline motor. No matter what preconceived notions are, that engine in the Mustang would be sweet...tons of power w/o all the extra weight...imagine that, a Mustang w/guts that can go around a corner w/o scraping the sidewalls off. I think the combo of the Mustang w/Skyline heart is pretty damned cool, and I love the original Mustang as crude as it can be.

What remains to be seen is if AMT actually does a good Skyline motor or really replicate this particular car. They're already doing stupid stuff like having you glue exhaust manifolds directly to the block instead of the heads on the Excalade and 300C... They have a golden opportunity to do this right...so of course I have very low expectations. Young builders hate AMT kits because of the cheese factor...they'd actually buy this Mustang that they'd normally ignore just for the engine. They might even notice that the Mustang kit isn't at all as horrible as they expect.

Yeah, if I had stopped and thought about it, I would have realized that fact. I would love to see the weight on that engine vs a 5.0l. I wonder how much lighter it would be with all of the stuff hanging off of it.
I will be at Road Atlanta on March 18-19. I invite you to take a ride in my Mustang and let's see if it will "scrape the sidewalls off", even with it's "prehistoric" pushrod iron motor. Bring a helmet!

BTW, I was in the process of working my way around those cars in the second picture. I had just gotten by the 350Z

I just did a quick web search and i found this from Sport Comact Car Magazines web site. It was in an article on swapping a Skyline engine into a 240sx:

Be prepared to accept more weight with the RB25DET. Fully dressed with both crossmembers and the steering rack attached (but no A/C), the KA24DE weighs about 540 pounds. With two more cylinders, a much beefier transmission and a turbocharger, the RB25DET weighs about 720 pounds. That's an extra 180 pounds to accelerate, stop and turn. Good thing it makes more power.

Wow! That thing is heavier than I thought! I really figured it wold be close to the same as a 5.0l.

I got these figures from a hot rod site when I Googled "Engine Weights":

289-302= 460lbs
5.0l= 411lbs.

Add in the length of two cylinders on that long inline block hanging over the front wheels and this looks less and less like a viable swap. Of course, the Skyline engine makes huge torque with that turbo, but all aluminium cyl heads to the 5.0 and then a turbo setup and it too wold make good power.

Sorry, Bob....You know how I am about Japanese cars!:D

Yeah, I remember

The "film" is called "Tokyo Drift" or something along those lines.

The engine swap may seem odd and of course will throw every 'Murrican into apoplectic outrage, much the same way the words "Toyota Camry" have done in NA$$CAR. Putting more weight over the front tires is probably a way to make it even more tail-happy. The Mustang could have had a boat-anchor Ford inline 6 in it's former life, especially if it was exported to Japan. Regardless, many Mustangs had that motor. This engine swap isn't so outrageous if you think about that.

The movie might suck. The car idea is weird but I like it. It's guaranteed to create controversy. I should have avoided this entire thread once the word "ricer" was used.

The swap is probably logical given the premise of an American car in Japan. It would probably be a better move than trying to import the parts and expertise from the US when they have such a huge aftermarket and knowledge base for these engines.

Controversy? Come on Bob, the last thing I would ever do is stir up some controversy.

OK, maybe the term "ricer" was inappropriate, especially given the external appearance of the Mustang in question. No wings, neon, or sticker "roll call" in view. I'll refrain from using such non-PC terms in the future. You know it was all in fun, right?

I know you're joking, but other's don't necessarily know. I've done my share of stirring up controversy on message boards, especially when I'm misunderstood. I'm trying to stay out of trouble lately ;)
