Hi guys,

Does anyone have any experience with Testors Honduras Maroon paint? Is it a metallic? I am considering it for my Lancia D24 model.

Thanks,

Bill

I have a can of it but have not used it on anything. All I can say is that it is definately a metallic.

It's a maroon metallic and very flaky (all Testors lacquers have very out-of-scale metallics). It would look terrible on your model, to be quite honest.

Even though the Testors site doesn't say metallic, I suspected as much. Too bad. Does anyone know of a good rattle can paint that is easy to use in an appropriate Lancia dark red/maroon? I'm not getting good results with a home mix maroon in Createx.

Dark red/maroon is a tough one, Bill. Tamiya has a maroon that's rather dark, nice color but probably a shade or two darker than you'd like.

Testors has had a dark red/almost blood red enamel for ages that's a pretty nice color, but it might be too light.

You might want to peruse the racks at Hobbytown Kennesaw, look at acrylics & Gunze's new solvent-based acrylic lacquers.

Maroon is tough to mix w/o turning brown. I have a feeling you've found this out the hard way.

Ferrari "Rosso Barchetta" is a nice Italian blood red. Scalefinishes.com probably has it, or can get it for you. It's a lacquer, like MCW or Cobra Colors.

I can bring some examples of paints & painted stuff to the meeting on Sunday if you'd like.

Here's the color I'm looking for:

Tamiya maroon (TS11) is probably a decent match for that dark color. Shoot it over Tamiya super fine white primer in thin coats. Best to decant and airbrush. It's a gloss color so you don't necessarily need to clearcoat, but Tamiya solid colors sometimes will get thin in spots when you are wetsanding/polishing too aggressively. I can bring that Mini Cooper to the meeting for you to see the color in person.

Thanks Bob, I would love to see the Tamiya color in person. Also, I wrote Testors and they say their maroon is not metallic, so it may be worth investigating.

Testors isn't known for being accurate. It's metallic or pearl.

Here's an example:

Hiroboy in England mixes colors to match. He has paint chips from Lancia from the 50s and says he will mix for you.
Specifically look at:

http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48_77&products_id=2913

He has quick and reliable service, although there is a threat of a postal strike in the UK. Couldnt make it for the NNL though.
