This one was 'done in' by me.

The fit of the body to the chassis of this kit was an afterthougt by Hasegawa. The chassis is too big to fit inside the body, without a shoehorn and hammer.

I got the two parts together and misaligned the front locater tab, and one front wheel was sitting higher than the other, while trying to correct that I pushed a headlight loose, and it fell into the engine bay. So the 2 parts needed to come apart to repair that.

While trying to remove the chassis this happened..

Just minutes before it looked perty dang good..

This is more than discouraging. I have no clue how to repair this and get it back inside that body in one piece. The Hasegawa 944 kit is easier to source than the 968 and has the same chassis, so maybe one day I'll repair and finish this kit. Til then, this one is gonna collect dust.

Could you not align it in the body and glue it back together?

I haven't done this model nor own one so I don't know first hand how it all fits together. Sorry this happened; it doesn't look all that bad...if everything were to fit in place but if it's crammed in there against it's own will something has to give. Did you dry-fit the glass/body/interior/chassis beforehand? I've been bit often enough on final assemblies that I spend (waste...sometimes ;) ) a lot of time making sure the tolerance stack of the major components will all fit together at the end. Even so I get bit sometimes; my Scaglietti had some chassis warp that caused problems at the end but not while dry-fitting. Just set it down and leave it for awhile and you'll eventually figure something out when you're not so damned mad at the whole thing ;) :D

I did test fit a few times, and knew it was going to be a tight fit, and that I only would have one chance to get it right or have problems getting it back out. I never test fit it with the interior bucket on the chassis though, and that caused the problem. The added height of the interior made it twice as difficult to shoehorn in.

I think I've come up with a plan to get it fixed and inside the body, since calming down. I think I can glue the chassis and interior back together. After that has set and is straight and square, I'll trim the chassis to the dimensions of the interior bucket at the back to get rid of the overhang. That alone should give me an extra 1/4" to work with. We shall see..

Sounds like a plan.

Can't believe that I finally got an email response to a subscribed thread

:( :( :( Sorry this happened to your car Matt. I will look at my Porsche car lot
and see if I have a kit that we can rob a chassis from.
Henri:D :D

Thanks for the offer Henry, but I don't think I'll be needing it.

Yesterday was a day when everything seemed to be harder than it should, or just didn't seem to go right. Today was the complete opposite. Everything seemed to just fall into place today.

I had to trim the body in 2 places, and the chassis in 2 places, and position the motor level and correct. (It wasn't yesterday, and may have been a minor cause of yesterday's OOPS.)

I added all the mirrors, wipers, and decals today, and she's as good as new.

This was the last of the 4 front engined Porsches I wanted to complete this year. Here's a couple group shots of them.

  :D

Sometimes the finish just sneaks up on ya and you have to work a bit harder for it :D

Nobody will ever know looking at the Porsche that it almost didn't get finished.

Matt, glad you were able to fix this one.

Regarding those pictures, you can now 'fess up: are you sure it really wasn't a stranger you just met named "Dietrich" who broke your chassis, then ran in to the woods? :)

Great recovery! I always hear that "Anyone can make a model without making mistakes, only real modelers can make a mistake and fix it!" It looks completely awesome, and no one would be the wiser if you hadn't posted the almost disaster. It's always good to see someone not lose heart, either, 'cause I know I like to duck out when things start going south at the workbench. Fantastic model.
