As a reformed IPMS color nazi (I used to carry a Federal Color Standards fan deck of color samples in a leather slide rule belt case. The top of the case was fastened to my belt and a leather thong was attached to the bottom so it could be strapped to my leg for fast draws. ). Now I am happy with anything in a Tamiya can. Do I need to explain slide rules?
On to Porsche colors. Many of the IROC cars were painted in Porsche factory colors. Others were not.
One website of use is:
http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/scripts/depot.exe?pgm=aclgate.bbx
Look under Select European for Porsche colors (they have color chips for lots of manufacturers, although not all years). Since this is a German factory sheet, they are given German names.
Another good site is
http://www.356-911.com/modelinfo/911colours/911colours7173.htm
This gives some samples of colors (based on the paint number) for 1971-73 cars, and with US names. It has a request for owners to send in photos of their 911s to complete the site. It is fairly sparse at this point.
I am looking for Aubergine. The first site has German color names. Aubergine is French for eggplant, so we know it is a dark purple. The second site shows a Royal Purple sample, but not an Aubergine sample. Note that Krylon Iris is great for Royal Purple. A Google search on Porsche Aubergine gives this site:
www.westcoastautosport.com/docs/cars/2005/car-in00173.htm
Can I be this lucky?? http://www.opentrackaction.com/acmeforum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
:D Tamiya Lavender is close. A little experimenting on scrap plastic with base coats and I may have it. This is also close to a Veyron color.
BTW, it is interesting to note 2 colors from the Porsche paint list on site 1 (from 1968). Elfenbein is the interior color of Panzers and Sandbeige is an old exterior Panzer color. Nice to know Porsche is using up his old paint stocks from the 1940s.
