View Full Version : Fish eyes

I cleaned up a resin body. Gave it several coats of Tamiya primer everything looks good. Gave it several coats (mist then wet) of Tamiya white. Let it set up for several weeks. Everything looks good. Put on Tamiya tape then started on the yellow trim--mist then wet. The bottom of the rocker panels, the right rocker panel and part of the right bumper got bad fish eyes.
So where did the silicones come from? I can see how the bottom of the rocker panels might get some because they come in contact with surfaces, but why would it get it in just a small area?
What are the usual sources of silicones?

Does the paint look like it gathered where the 'eyes' are? Tamiya paint will bubble if it has the beginnings of a run or if it flows to a corner or edge gathering into a thick layer.

Sometimes Tamiya paint will bite back; especially some of the yellows. I've sometimes gotten a few minor fisheyes; they tend to be really small and they don't make much sense as there is not silicone contamination that I can tell. I think it's actually a weird reaction to it's own propellant. The little bubbles where the paint gathers when it's applied too heavy are from the propellant.
Luckily when this has happened I've been able to cover the tiny fisheyes with a really fast, wet pass of the paint and they fill in. It's nerve wracking, for sure. I've started decanting/airbrushing most Tamiya colors and haven't had the fisheye issue yet. Saves a lot of paint too. Clearcoats I'll start w/the airbrush, but the last pass I'll do a wet coat from the spray can.

I like the propellant gas idea.
Attached are 2 photos (enhanced to look their worst). I can redo-the rocker panel. Maybe polish off the nose.
When I was painting, I had to hold the car by the top since I was painting the underside of the rocker panels. I am wondering if while I was playing twister to paint it, I may have tilted the can.

That is definitely propellant...and if by chance that is chrome yellow or camel yellow they are the two worst colors to to bubble.
Takes light coats to keep it calmed down.

In hopes that this will be a learning situation, I can add a few more comments.
Yes it was Chrome Yellow. This was supposed to be a mist coat but came out fairly wet.
For the first mist coat and wet coat, I always soak the can in very warm water for about 15 minutes. Since this was to be the 3rd mist coat, I did not re-heat the can and it had reached room temperature. In the future, I will re-heat the can between all coats. It is probably not necessary for white or blue, but important for yellows and reds.

Sorry to hear of the issues but I definitely appreciate everyone's comments to the cause and possible cure. That' is what makes this club so great. Thanks guys.
