View Full Version : Ferrari F430 restyling

IMO Ferrari went a bit overboard updating the 360 Modena....or maybe not far enough...I don't know. The F430 looks like it's a 360 with a cheap body kit on it to me so I decided to see what I could about making it more to my liking.
First of all the 'shark nose' nostrils had to go...the roundness of them didn't match the many angular shapes added to the 430...but I did notice after I plugged the nostrils that the high rear haunches seemed even larger. I guess one reason for the shark nose other than a retro zing back to the 1961 F1 car was for balance.
To counter this, as much as I could, I sanded the rear haunches into a more round...softer shape, especially at the leading edge. So you can see the new nostril shape...maybe too angular...maybe not, eh? Will be able to tell more once it's primed so it's all one color. It's all experimental...will see what the consensus is after it's finished.
Secondly the tail lights which protruded above the deck had to go, this element was borrowed heavily from the Enzo styling...it works on that car but not the 430 IMO. I filled the stock tail placement holes and will redrill them a bit lower....below deck. My goal here is to make the rea of the car less blocky and busy...traditionally Ferrari with more elegance than the stock 430.

Looks good to me. I like the new front end.

The front looks so much like an after thought or even after market. It's a shame because the side profile has a stance that is just awesome.

An addition to the restyling is a new shape for the side windows. The B/C pillar now follows the haunch scoop lines and mirrors the rocker scoop. Tail lights are in there final location after two attempts of getting the holes to match.
I like the overall look...I think it's simple and more cohesive with the base 360 design than what Ferrari did. Wheels shown are just for mock up...don't know what it will finally wear.

Stunning work Brian. I always love your concepts.

Uh-oh, here comes Downie-pretend you're working :D
I'm liking the revised profile view and the taillight panel/hip lipo looks good too.
The front end needs more work IMHO, compared to the other details the openings look unfinished and raw and literally like a reactionary change from too big/too ovoid to too small and too angular and not really working with the details around them. The vents in front of the wheels (which don't need any tweaks IMHO) are overpowering them. IMHO there's a fairly simple and elegant solution to the openings that should look just right on this car, but I kinda wanna see how the maestro at Dino Scuderia Designhaus deals with this important detail before tipping my hat ;)

I noticed the same thing Bob. Maybe something like a bead roll around the front vents would help?

Thanks for your input.
I think the front holes could be even smaller and still work on this car....could the shape be tweaked, yes it could. The back of the car is so heavy looks wise...and maybe not helped by the new side windows....so for balance I made the front holes smallish to weight the front end. The extractors in front of the front wheels are way too big IMO, thought about making it at least a bit shorter but I got lazy.
I'll prolly leave the front holes as is...they will have a 3 dimensional duct behind them which will help that area a bit...plus the rims I have chosen for the car will tie even the front holes in the rest of the car.
It's all experimentation.

If the side vents stay the same, the front ones look too big. Smaller? Actually that's not a bad idea. Shape is very important, especially compared to side vents which may need work too for best appearance. The front ones as-is look too small; they're lost in a sea of urethane partly because they were placed dead-center in the middle of where the previous ones were. At a minimum they need dimension. The car could look good w/o any front vents. Think outside the box.
Here's the original idea w/a bit of depth:

Here are smaller openings, w/some 3D, and more cohesive shape:

Here is my idea of what would look good if the side vents remain:

While I like it, it's by no means the only solution. All Ferraris have heavy back-ends, I don't think this is out of balance at all. Making the front look heavy to balance the heavy back is sort of a tail-wagging-the-dog solution.

To me the second isn't really an improvement, and I completely avoided the shape of the last one LOL!
Ah well, to each his own.

I can save time, glue, styrene, putty, braincells by doing more customization on the computer before starting to cut the model up, that's for sure.

Sweet that the computer can do all the options BEFORE the knife hits the plastic.
I think the shape of all the vents does hinge on the wheel design though.
Maybe thats where you could gleen inspiration.

That last render isn't bad actually.
I think I'll stay with what I have....it works well with these rims and looks better in person than pics.

Does look much better w/those wheels, hope you give those openings some proper depth so they don't look stamped out of roofing tin ;)

No model body looks that great when it's just the empty shell sitting there, be patient, Mr. ADD.

If this proves anything, it's that Ferrari is in trouble. Anything is better than stock.

Damn & I was looking forward to building one out of the box. Maybe I will just to have a base reference available. Brian - looks great.

I'm not planning on building any F430 any time soon, so nobody should worry over building/not building one in any particular style ;) You wanna steal one of my ideas? Go for it!
My '06 plate is full as it is.

I'm really liking it in white primer...so maybe white, if not something custom.

I found this chop which isn't bad, except for where he raised the rear haunch scoops.

The F430 can be a real stinkeroo...this car should knock my socks off w/the color and all, but this is awful. I used to love these rims, now I'm not so sure. The Lambo Gallardo Spyder can wear this look so much better:

 My F430 is gonna be awful then, because I'm building mine based on that pic. :D
It won't be pearl orange though, but a solid orange. Lamborghini Arancio Ymir.

Guess I stepped in it now ;)
Please prove my big mouth wrong :D
I'm so far behind I won't get to an F430 Spider. I'm still psyched about my yellow Stradale-ized Modena Spider sitting unloved in my basement.
